School Districts, Students, Ethics, and AI: The Promise

  • Respect: We respect the autonomy, privacy, and dignity of all individuals and groups involved in or affected by AI.
  • Fairness: We ensure that AI is used in a way that promotes equity, inclusion, and diversity, and does not discriminate or harm anyone on the basis of their identity, background, or circumstances.
  • Accountability: We are accountable for the design, development, deployment, and evaluation of AI, and we accept responsibility for its impacts and outcomes.
  • Transparency: We are transparent about the goals, methods, data sources, assumptions, limitations, and risks of AI, and we communicate them clearly and honestly.
  • Beneficence: We use AI to advance the well-being, learning outcomes, and development of students and the educational community.

Implementation

The following steps will be taken to implement this policy:

  • Step 1: The Tech Deputy will conduct a needs assessment and an ethical impact assessment for each school or school district. The needs assessment will identify the educational goals, challenges, and opportunities that can be addressed by AI, and the ethical impact assessment will evaluate the potential benefits, risks, and harms of using AI in the educational context.
  • Step 2: The Tech Deputy will design, develop, and deploy AI solutions that are tailored to the specific needs and goals of each school or school district, and that adhere to the core values and principles of this policy. The Tech Deputy will also provide training, support, and guidance to the school or school district staff on how to use and manage the AI solutions effectively and ethically.
  • Step 3: The Tech Deputy will collaborate with the school or school district staff to monitor, evaluate, and audit the performance, impact, and outcomes of the AI solutions, and to identify and address any issues, concerns, or feedback that may arise. The Tech Deputy will also report regularly to the school or school district administration on the progress, results, and challenges of using AI in education.
